Efficiency and Anarchy

Efficiency – the state or quality of being efficient, or able to accomplish something with the least waste of time and effort; competency in performance.

This definition of efficiency is a mechanical definition. Efficiency can be used in a variety of ways. The process which is being carried out may be less time consuming and able to achieve the goal with a great deal of effort put into the what’s being produced; but does this truly help the surrounding socio-economical environment?

Stateless Capitalism is a good example of something being efficient in one way but contrary in another. In stateless capitalism, all the laws of how the world operates are ignored by applying no regulation, no political monopoly to govern a commune or region, and the ways of living life are up to what the people in the region or commune decide. This is a preposterous idea. The problem with Stateless Capitalism is how economically efficient it may seem, it is not true efficiency: benefiting the needs of everyone, not creating a close to ideal environment for humans to establish themselves in.

The market under no regulation is said to be theoretically “efficient”. This is due to the concept that there would be no regulations to slow and prohibit the process of trade and commerce. Which is very much true! The freer the market the more efficient it is. The freer the market the freer the people? True and false. When the market is under less regulation, the populace has more of a choice in what they want to do financially. Choice. The key term in that sentence. There can’t always be a choice. We live in a world of imperfection, when you theorize that you will implement a system that everybody will obey ,and even if a number of individuals did disobey the “law” the system could collapse? Terrible indeed.

The way stateless capitalism works is that there is no government to regulate and control the life of others. Giving complete power to every individual in that region. With that power an individual could easily establish an authoritarian dictatorship in that region for there would only be the people’s choice whether or not to stop him, in his way. There is a radical focus on private ownership and the ability for anyone to do what she or he wants with their time, body, and thought. The non aggression pact gives the individual the choice to kill. This is a choice that should not always be permitted, although it must in some cases for the world is imperfect.

The non aggression pact is efficient in theory and would be great if everyone followed it; but once more, that is not likely to happen. Those that do disobey the non aggression pact, are dealt with by private corporations focused on helping those who, most likely, receive funds or are paid through a subscription. All services are provided through insurances. (Meaning all is payed for.) There is no healthcare, welfare, etc. the locals in the area would need to decide whether they want to take care of those who cannot partake in life the same way the majority can. How realistic does it seem to the all the readers that the majority of human beings would put aside selfishness for the sake of voluntary exchange, living in harmony, and caring about others. If one corporation, insurance agency, or enterprise were to put selfishness as a priority; the population in that corporation’s vicinity could easily go under that entity’s control.

The problem with this system is that it’s too Platonian; utopian. The ideology itself is based off of utopian libertarianism. Anarchism itself is life without organization, life without rulers, hierarchy, rules, boundaries, anything. Just the ability to do whatever an individual wants. This is not true efficiency. True efficiency is a society like the American society, or Japanese, Canadian, Scandinavian societies. The Nation’s that are truly efficient recognize imperfection. Instead of developing blueprints for the ideal society, focus on improving what is at hand.

The worst enemy of life, freedom and the common decencies is total anarchy; their second worst enemy is total efficiency.

– Aldous Huxley

In the environment where everyone is permitted to do as they please, human condition takes over and human inheritance of “sin” comes into the theatre. Those who choose to kill can and justify it by using the argument of the non aggression pact. Judges that are bribed by the defender would easily win. Corporations that could easily monopolize themselves and take over a region. In this society, instead of efficiency being achieved; progressive modernism is achieved.

It’s in the writer’s best intention that those reading realize the mistakes we are taking as a species into ultimate freedom. We have the freedom to do good, not wrong. Do not descend into the depths of nihilism.

Goodness is about character – integrity, honesty, kindness, generosity, moral courage, and the like. More than anything else, it is about how we treat other people.

-Dennis Prager
